Taxes

So where exactly do your tax dollars go?

Summit County Government retains about 1/3 of the property taxes collected.

On average, only 33 cents (1/3) of every property tax dollar collected by the County actually stays with the county. The other 67 cents (2/3) is distributed to the towns, school district and other special districts.

Of that 1/3, the County distributes about 2/3 of those funds to support the ballot initiatives approved by voters such as mental health, open space, wildfire, public facilities, childcare, housing, and more.

Where do your property tax dollars go?

Sales Tax

  • Sales tax is remitted to the State. The State then returns the money to the County and the Towns (wherever the money was spent).

  • The majority of the County’s 2% sales tax is returned to the Towns.

  • Additionally, the Towns each levy their own sales taxes.

  • Sales taxes go into the General Fund. These taxes can fund anything from public health to public safety to road construction and maintenance. Basically, sales taxes can fund anything that is paid for by the General Fund.

Lodging Tax

  • The unincorporated Summit County lodging tax is 2%.

  • Of that, the State mandates that 10% be reserved for tourism education (like adding signage to the Recpath, promoting Leave No Trace, etc.).

  • The allocation of the remaining 90% is determined by the Board of County Commissioners.

  • Lodging taxes have funded affordable housing, early childhood education and road maintenance - all approved by Summit County voters.
